Hadleigh Farm Profile
In 1890, William Booth, the founder of The Salvation Army, bought Hadleigh Farm. He helped men who were unemployed and gave them the chance to train and learn new skills in farming. Booth found the Hadleigh Farm trainees jobs in Britain and aboard in places like Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Today Hadleigh Farm now comprises of an employment training centre, a farm and rare breeds centre, a monthly farmer’s market and tearooms which are open to the public.
We farm 400 acres of conventional crops, 100 acres of organic crops and 300 acres of organic grassland which is grazed by the cattle.
The farm’s soil type is gravel over clay and landslips are progressive. The marshland is drained for cropping. The River Thames is in close proximity which can lead to a mild, wet climate.
The farm has joined the countryside stewardship scheme to help enhance the environment. Work which has been undertaken includes hedge planting and laying, the planting of beetle banks and conservation strips and tree planting, which all helps to encourage wildlife.
